UMass selected as favorite to win CAA Championship

The University of Massachusetts was picked as the prohibitive favorite to win the Colonial Athletic Association championship in a vote of the league's head coaches and selected media, receiving 15 first-place votes.

With 12 starters returning from the team that reached the Division 1-AA title game, the Minutemen were the overwhelming choice to win the North Division, nearly doubling the first-place votes received by runner-up New Hampshire (eight). Maine, Northeastern, Hofstra, and Rhode Island rounded out the North voting.

James Madison (11) and Delaware (10) shared most of the first-place votes in the South Division, with Towson and Villanova receiving one each.

UNH quarterback Ricky Santos, who received the Walter Payton Award as the top 1-AA player as a junior, was chosen as the CAA's preseason offensive player of the year.
