By this afternoon, the sides had reached agreement on a deal that will pay Posey just over $3 million - the amount left on the team’s mid-level exception - next season. The full contract will pay him $7 million over the next two years, with Posey holding an option on the second season.

Big Papi's back and he helped lead the Sox to a 10-5 victory over the Angels on Saturday Night. The Sox started the game shaky, down 5-0 early, but that quickly changed. After the team scored a run, David Ortiz stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded in the 5th and things seemed like they were about to take a turn for the better. He proved all the doubters wrong (including myself) and hit a grand slam to put them on top 6-5. The Angels never were able to comeback from this as the Red Sox added some insurance runs in the 8th. Manny Ramirez was having one of the worst games of his career (4 strikeouts) but he came through with a clutch 2-RBI double in the 8th to push the score to 8-5. Varitek knocked Manny in and JD Drew scored on a wild pitch and the score was 10-5. After Schilling left in the 6th the bullpen only allowed one hit. Closer Jonathan Papelbon came in to secure the victory in the 9th by striking out two and a
great play by Alex Cora helped. Awesome game and it feels good when Ortiz is hitting like he has been.

Clay Buchholz picked up his first win in a Red Sox uniform in game 1 of Friday's twinbill against the Angels. Buchholz struck out five allowing only three earned runs over six innings. He got plenty of run support as the Red Sox exploded early in the game scoring six runs in the 1st inning. David Ortiz (20) and Dustin Pedroia (6) both hit home runs and JD Drew went 3-for-5 with a triple and an RBI to lead the offense. Doug Mirabelli got injured running the bases early and had to be pulled from the game, straining his right calf. Jason Varitek played the rest of the game. This caused a ton of roster moves and changes. Catcher Kevin Cash of AAA Pawtucket is being flown in from Ottowa to start game 2. Clay Buchholz was sent back to AAA as expected, Brendan Donnelly was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40 man roster and Bobby Kielty will be called up from AAA tommorow. Wily Mo Pena was traded to Washington for cash considerations and a player to be named later. Game 2 is on at 7:05, Josh Beckett will take the mound.

Clay Buchholz will be pitching the first game of tomorrow's doubleheader against the Angels. He will be flown into Boston today, from Ottawa, where the PawSox are playing, and is expected to be at Fenway Park this afternoon at 3 p.m.

He will be sent back down to Pawtucket after the game.

Jacoby Ellsbury is also expected to be called up to the Red Sox tomorrow. Ellsbury will likely be added to the roster for the second game of the doubleheader, taking the spot of Buchholz, who will then be sent back to Pawtucket.

Sox sign draft picks

Ryan Dent, the team's second pick in the draft (No. 62), has officially signed. Dent is a shortstop out of Woodrow Wilson High School in California. He appeared ready to sign when the team was in San Diego, but the deal was held up for about six weeks before getting done.

Hunter Morris, the team's third pick in the draft (No. 84, second round), will not be signing with the Sox. Morris is a high school third baseman from Alabama.

Wily Mo could be designated for assignment

This game was full of comebacks and reasons to smile. Jon Lester made his 2007 Fenway debut and received about 4 standing ovations. He pitched extremely well, going 7 innings, allowing just 1 ER and just 2 hits, striking out 4. Jon didn't pick up the victory because it was a 1-0 Devil Rays advantage for the entire game. Mike Timlin came up huge striking out BJ Upton with the bases loaded and ending the 8th. Eric Gagne also made his own "comeback." After pitching poorly in his first few Red Sox games Eric Gagne struck out the side in the 9th inning setting up what Jerry Remy called one of the most exciting Red Sox victories of the year. Mike Lowell tied the game with a solo home run and Coco Crisp won the game on an RBI single knocking in Jason Varitek. Coco had been out for a few games with what the Red Sox believed was some sort of virus. It's exciting because the Sox gained a game on the Yankees and the team performed well.

Tim Wakefield continued his dominance over Tampa Bay Monday by throwing an 8 inning shutout and picking up his 18th victory against the Devil Rays. The 40 year old carried a no hitter into the 7th inning, allowing only two hits and striking out six. It was his most impressive outing in a long time. For most of the night the offense was pretty quiet but Big Papi David Ortiz started them off on the right foot with his one-run double that put the Sox on the board in the 1st. Then Mike Lowell and Julio Lugo both knocked in RBI's later to put the Sox on top. Lights out closer Jonathan Papelbon came in in the 9th and struck out the first two batters he faced. Then he walked BJ Upton but was able to get the next hitter to ground out. Awesome game. Jon Lester makes his long awaited return to Fenway Park tommorow and is sure to get a standing ovation.

For the second time in the series Eric Gagne and the Boston Red Sox bullpen blew the lead and the game. Gagne allowed a two run home run in the 8th to Miguel Tejada that tied the game. Then a poor managing decision by Terry Francona to leave Kyle Synder in to face Kevin Millar resulted in the game winning 3-run home run. Curt Schilling pitched well when he was in there though as well as Manny Delcarmen who came up with three clutch strikeouts in the 9th to send it to extras. This game was disasterous though. It's sad that Hideki Okajima who was having a great year lost his job to this guy. Seriously, what's wrong with Eric Gagne? He's allowed 8 earned runs in 6 appearences.

Josh Beckett picked up his MLB-leading 15th victory tonight on a strong performance that came close to a complete game shutout not once but twice. But finally he was up to 115 pitches and just couldn't go any longer. Manny Delcarmen came in but walked the first batter he faced. It took lights out closer Jonathan Papelbon to get the final out. Terry Francona didn't want to get the fans even more angry after last night's devestating loss. Beckett struck out 8 over 8 and 2/3 and only allowed 2 earned runnings that came in the 9th. The offense was led by JD Drew (3 for 5, 2 RBI) and Julio Lugo (2-3, 2 RBI). The Red Sox evened up the series with the victory tonight and Curt Schilling looks to win the series for the Sox tommorow.

Bullpen blows it??

This pitchers duel between Daisuke Matsuzaka and Erik Bedard quickly become two absolutely disgusting bullpen collapses. It was absolutely horrendous, especially from a Boston point of view. The game looked as if it was gonna go the Red Sox way in the 8th. After being blanked through seven, the Sox exploded for 6 hits and 5 runs in the 8th. Wily Mo tied the game with a hit up the middle and Julio Lugo helped the Sox take the lead with a textbook bunt. Then the Sox scrapped together a few more runs. The game was looking good as our Gagne in the 8th and either Papelbon or Okajima in the 9th was looking very nice. Then it happened. Eric Gagne absolutely blew it and allowed the Orioles to cut it to a one run lead. The worst play of the game was by JD Drew, he ran in for a ball and it went through his legs. It resulted in two runs being scored. Then Okajima got out of it after allowing the tying run, but it wasn't that big of a deal at the time. Coco Crisp was on 2nd in the 9th and stole 3rd making a resurgance possible. But the Red Sox disappointed yet again and came up empty. And then there was a runner on 2nd after Hideki Okajima immedietly allowed a ground rule double with no outs. They got one out but the runner advanced to third on a bunt. So then Nick Markakis came up and popped out, allowing the runner to tag home. Crisp threw it in cutting off to Pedroia and Pedroia was unable to come up with the throw, Baltimore won. What a sad, sad, sad loss. 6-5

Wily Mo wants to stay

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Josh Zeide wanted to make something perfectly clear - contrary to a Globe report, his client, Wily Mo Pena, does not want to be traded from the Red Sox.

“His preference would be to stay in Boston and to help the team win a World Series this year,” said Zeide by phone yesterday, shortly after communicating with Pena.

“Wily is certainly focused on helping his team win this year, really wants to be a part of it, and has felt that way since the beginning of the season. It’s just unfortunate that the situation had made that difficult for him to be as productive as he would want to be because his situation isn’t what he was expecting.”

Now, we ask, what to do about Lester?

Command continues to be an issue and he struggled again Wednesday (3 1/3, 8 hits, 3 walks, 5 earned runs). The Red Sox will likely give him a few more starts to work things out, but there will have to be improvement or he will tax the bullpen too much.

Lester has a future with the Sox, but this is still a developmental year for him. He may or may not find his groove this year.

If Lester cannot get it together this season, here is one possible solution: Clay Buchholz. In his past two Pawtucket starts, Buchholz seems to have settled down (13 1/3 innings, 9 hits, 0 walks, 3 earned runs, 18 strikeouts).

Boston may get a look at Buchholz next week. He is on schedule to pitch Aug. 17, the day Boston has a day/night home doubleheader with the Angels.

After a shaky performance from Jon Lester, the Red Sox won the back and forth game to take the final game of the series. If it wasn't for the brilliance of the bullpen the Red Sox wouldn't have been able to win this one.

Reggie Miller says he is contemplating a return to the NBA, this time with the Boston Celtics.

Miller, who turns 42 on Aug. 24, played his entire 18-year career with the Indiana Pacers before retiring in 2005. Since his playing days ended he has worked as a television analyst for TNT.
Miller was all set to continue that job when Celtics general manager Danny Ainge and coach Doc Rivers asked him to think about joining their revamped team in a reserve role, playing about 15 minutes per game.

Miller said he is calling friends and peers, seeking their advice and listening to their feedback before he makes his decision. He still plays recreationally, but must determine if he wants to go through the physical and mental grind of an 82-game season. He also wonders how his body would respond to the intensive training it would take to get him back to NBA shape.

This was a poorly managed game by Terry Francona and a poorly played game by the entire team. Wakefield shouldn't have been in the game all the way until he blew the lead, he isn't a "stud pitcher" that can get out of big jams. Lugo made an error on a play that should have been routine that would of gotten us out of the inning faster. Instead we had bases loaded with 0 outs. I wish this team would smarten up and play baseball how it should be our we'll all be eating our words. It was too early to count the Yankees out and I think after cutting the game to 5 games they've started to scare us. We need something to spark a turnaround to this crappy play.

Barry Bonds just broke Henry Aaron's all-time home run record of 755 that stood alone for 31 years. Baseball fans across fans are having mixed emotions about the record. The speculation of whether or not Bonds did steroids ruined and tainted the record.

Not only is what Hank Aaron went through to get the record more impressive then Bonds, but so is how he did it. He always said he wanted to be remembered for doing it consistently. Every year he hit around 40 home runs and hit about .300. 755 to me will be more important then whatever Barry Bonds retires with. I'll remember Hank Aaron's 715th before I remember Bonds' 756th. It just isn't right because as far as I'm concerned Barry Bonds cheated the game of baseball and he cheated himself. The record won't matter and doesn't matter because of the era he played in and because he was the posterboy for steroids.

Ken Griffey Jr. should have been the one to get this record. Unfortunately his career was plagued with injuries. He was certainly on pace to break the record and was a hard enough worker to do it. He played the game the way it should be played, gave it his all every night and to this day has the best swing in baseball. He's on his way to 600 right now and I wish him luck.

So Barry Bonds is the new home run king and barring any serious injuries Alex Rodriguez should chase his record one day. All I can say is Hank Aaron's place in history will be far more important then Bonds.

Wily Mo Pena clears waivers

According to Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald, Wily Mo Pena has cleared waivers without a claim. It seems no team was willing to risk taking on the $580K owed to Pena this year. Or maybe it was the $2MM+ he'll get in 2008 before reaching free agency. Pena can now be freely traded to any team in baseball, though the players received would have to clear waivers too if on the 40-man roster. The way around it would be to make them players to be named later.

So, we still have Wily Mo if you didn't exactly understand. It's like when Manny cleared waivers last year, but nobody wanted to take on his contract. Somebody needs to make a claim on him though, which they haven't. The White Sox should make a claim, if their interests haven't changed.

PawSox starter and Red Sox pitching prospect Clay Buchholz was outstanding in his fifth start of the season at the Triple-A level. The crafty right-hander worked seven solid innings, allowing one run on four hits with nine strikeouts.

With the game knotted at 1-1 heading into the eighth, PawSox reliever Edgar Martinez suffered the loss when he surrendered five runs on five hits in two thirds of an inning of work.

In a game where the Red Sox left 22 men on base, the umpiring didn't help. There were probably three instances where I could have said that the umpire had money on the Angels. Manny got ejected on an absolutely ridiculous argument. He was arguing balls on strikes but eventually headed back the dugout and the umpire followed him there and then tossed him, like he was waiting to do it. But I won't get into that. Curt Schilling pitched solid, striking out 5 over six innings. His only real mistake was the homer by Izturis. I would say that he's back and just needs another start or two to get back to his old form. Kevin Youkilis went 2 for 4 with a home run. Brandon Moss made his Red Sox debut and looked like a pretty scrappy hitter. He didn't get his first hit yet but in one of his at bats he fouled off a ton of pitches and nearly hit it out of the park, to the warning track. I wish we could take this game back, it just was a bad loss and a loss that didn't have to happen. The Red Sox play the Angels tonight at 10:05 PM EST. Tim Wakefield (13-9) is pitching.

Celtics sign Scot Pollard

The Celtics agreed to terms with free agent forward/center Scot Pollard on Monday, according to executive director of basketball operations/general manager Danny Ainge. The 6-foot-11-inch, 265-pound Pollard got a one-year deal believed to be worth the veteran minimum ($1.2 million for 10 years service). He adds a much-needed big man to the Celtics' frontcourt and raises the number of players under contract to 12, one shy of the league minimum.

On the tradition of the Celtics
The decline of the Celtics wasn't entirely his fault. He wasn't responsible for all the bad draft picks, questionable trades and curious coaching decisions. He was out with an injury for all but the final two games of the Celtics 20-game losing streak this season. But the fact is, the Celtics missed the playoffs the past two seasons on his watch. "It definitely weighs on me," Pierce says. "This is not just any old franchise. This is a storied franchise, great. So many of the top 50 players come out of this franchise." He sees the championship banners every time he comes to the arena. He notices when a Bob Cousy, John Havlicek or Bill Russell sits in the stands. "I want to continue on what they did," he says.

"I just feel like this is our time, man," Pierce says. "I'll probably play [another] four or five years in the league. These last five years, this is going to determine what people are going to be talking about for the rest of our lives, as basketball players and off the court. These are the years that people will remember when it's all over. "I always want to leave my mark. I played the game, but I want to leave my mark on it. Spivey & Kielty join AAA Pawtucket

The Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League announced that they have sold the contract of second-baseman Junior Spivey to the Boston Red Sox. Spivey will report immediately to AAA Pawtucket of the International League.

Javier Lopez was optioned to Pawtucket to make room for Curt Schilling, who will make his long awaited return to the mound tonight.

Boston will be without utility player Eric Hinske when it faces the Angels this week, as he tends to some personal business at home in Phoenix.

The Red Sox travel south to Anaheim to take on the Angels on Monday night. Schilling (6-4, 4.20 ERA) takes to the hill against right-hander Jered Weaver (7-5, 4.00 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 10:05 p.m. ET.

The Red Sox killed the Mariners today. Some nice defensive plays and a big last three innings from the offense really put this game away. Eight players on the Sox got RBI's as Manny Ramirez led the way with a home run and 2 RBI's. Josh Beckett struck out nine over 6 2/3 allowing only a single run and absolutely dominated Seattle hitters. The only player without a hit on the Sox was Jason Varitek who went 0 for 4. Okajima, Delcarmen and Snyder all did their part to finish the game coming out of the bullpen. The Red Sox won the series 2-1 and will head to Los Angeles tommorow to take on the Angels. Curt Schilling will come off of the disabled list and make his long awaited return. First pitch should be at approximately 10:05 PM EST. On a side note, I'd like to complain about the Moose that attempted to run Coco Crisp over in an ATV. Those kind of things are immature, irresponsible and absolutely ridiculous. Sure, make fun of the team, get the crowd into it but leave Coco alone.

This is probably one of the best games the pitching staff threw. Daisuke Matsuzaka went seven innings striking out ten. Eric Gagne pitched the eighth and struck out one. Jonathan Papelbon closed it out striking out two in the 9th. But it took more than pitching to win this one, the Sox captain Jason Varitek took center stage in this one. He knocked in two runs, which turned out to be a crucial two runs in the 4th on a double. It wasn't exactly the greatest game offensively with only two players getting more then one hit (Lugo and Youkilis) but it was a good victory because we saw some great pitching.

By the way, for all the people hoping we would sign Brevin Knight, I have some bad news for you. He signed with the LA Clippers yesterday for $4 million for the next two years.

Our focuses should be on another point guard, a small forward and a legit center. It pains me to see Brian Scalabrine and Brandon Wallace as Paul Pierce's backups at SF. It also pains me to see only two players on the roster over 6'9''. There's a few guys left out there that fill the voids in this team. Veterans would be the best but if we can get some defensive minded D-Leaguers that wouldn't be too bad.

When Perkins needs a rest Dikembe can come in and block a shot or two. That's all he has to do. I'm also much more comfortable with Garnett at the 4 giving us the best chance to win games. He played over 70 games last year and grabbed over ten rebounds a game multiple times while Yao Ming was out. The guy still has gas in the tank, believe it or not.

Barnes fits into this system well too because he won't be expected to do any scoring at all like he was in Golden State's 7 man rotation. He has continues to improve every year and there's no reason why he wouldn't flourish with the Celtics.

Brown has always just been a consistent, solid, durable big man for his entire career. He plays Center and can eat minutes for Kendrick Perkins. Brown at age 37 showed that even recently he can score in bunches and play heavy minutes last season. In his final playoff game against Detroit, Brown scored 20 points. Brown is a great guy too, don't count him out to continue to do it for the fans on and off the court. He's battle tested, playing 81 playoff games in his career and could definitely bring some leadership and experience to the Celts.

Ruben Patterson is a veteran that's been with a few different teams in his NBA career. He isn't one of the better known players in the league but he's able to defend every position very well and is a servicable backup to Paul Pierce. Patterson's one of those players that just plays defense, defense, defense all the time and we could probably grab him for pretty cheap too. He's consistently played well on both sides of the ball for the past four seasons and doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

This guy has something to prove everytime he steps on the court and has done that since his return. Bell would be a great 6th man off the bench to fill in for any staggered substitutions. If one of Rondo, Allen or Pierce gets into any trouble whether it's a fatigue issue or foul trouble he'll be able to play heavy minutes.

Troy Hudson has been Kevin Garnett's teammate for five years and developed a chemistry with him. It also is a plus that Hudson adds depth and experience to the 1 spot. Supposedly there are strong rumors coming out of Cleveland that he's on his way here and that Kevin Garnett has been lobbying for him to be signed. He was recently bought out by Minnesota and is looking to bring his solid play elsewhere. For his entire career he has been a decent player to give a good 15-25 minutes and hit some shots. He's been excellent from the charity stripe and can come in at the end of a game if you need somebody to hit free throws. It is mostly the connection between Hudson and Garnett that makes him such an attractive free agent.

He's been pretty consistent his entire career and has traveled to quite a few teams grabbing about 5 rebounds every year.

I still think Dikembe Mutombo will sign. I was wrong this morning when I told Matt that the Rockets have offered $1.83 million. I got that figure from someone assuming that number in a conversation about the Rockets' luxury tax situation. For now, they have offered $1.2, the veteran's minimum. If they have to, they will have a tough decision to make about going to the $1.83 figure. Also, I said the Celtics were very interested, but had not made an offer. That was true at the time, but they have since made their offer, also the veteran's minimum. I'm hearing there is a third team showing interest.

For the moment, anyway, management doesn’t intend to make its brimming base of season ticket-holders help float Garnett’s deal in the form of a price increase.

“Ticket demand is through the roof, which is one thing that will help. And then there are the playoffs, and more revenue comes that way. But this was a basketball decision.”

Though it would be a stretch to say that Garnett could almost pay for himself by virtue of greater ticket sales, playoff revenue and increased merchandising, there is more of a financially secure feeling on Causeway Street these days.

In a game with more then one controversial call, the Sox really just couldn't overcome the adversety they faced this game. It was a rough loss, especially after a few blown calls that would of changed the complexity of the game. One was a tag by Kevin Youkilis the umpire missed (below) and the other was a Mike Lowell tag at third base the umpire also missed. But in the end, the Sox offense didn't do enough to get the win. Big Papi hit a home run but it wasn't enough as Seattle's Yuniesky Betancourt knocked in 4 RBI's including a 3-run home run to secure the victory for the Mariners. The Sox left 5 runners in scoring position with 2 outs. They just weren't hitting like usual. The M's won the game 7-4 and continued their regular season dominance over the Sox in '07. They lead the series 1-0, today Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Sox look to tie up the series.

Drew out of lineup to attend to son & wife

J.D. Drew intended to return to the Red Sox’ starting lineup yesterday after missing the first two games of the Baltimore series, but was lifted less than an hour before the 7-4 victory in order to attend to familial duties after his 17-month-old son, Jack David, underwent surgery earlier in the week.

Change in Rotation
The Sox made a minor change in their plans for the activation of Curt Schilling who will now come off the disabled list on Monday to face the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim. Schilling hasn’t pitched for the Red Sox since June 18 due to right shoulder tendinitis, but was nearly unhittable in three rehab appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket.

Francona said Josh Beckett will pitch in Seattle on Sunday, the day originally discussed for Schilling, in order to better line up the starting rotation for the upcoming weeks due to off days in the schedule the next two Thursdays. Schilling said he was fine with the switch.

Contenders or Not?

The Boston Celtics: Contenders or Not?

The Celtics have started to gain prestige around the league even though Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce haven't yet stepped on the court together. The odds in Vegas of them winning the NBA Finals are 5-1, 4th only to Phoenix, Dallas and San Antonio. After being the second-worst team in the league? This is of course a direct effect of aquiring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Are they actually contenders or pretenders?

In the NBA it is a common belief that you need 2 star players, even a good third player to win titles. The Celtics have that. But what happens when they need to play an overtime game or a 7-game series in the playoffs? No player can go 50+ minutes at their most competitive level. That's when it becomes "your bench against my bench" to handle the time when your best players need a rest. The Celtics at this point have one of the worst benches in the league and clearly need some help. There are two players on the bench with more then three years of experience, Brian Scalabrine and Eddie House. Neither are exactly the most gifted players either. The best player off of our bench, Tony Allen, is coming off of a torn ACL for the second time in his career. And the rest of our bench is rookies and second-year players. I think our starting five is set but besides Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins we don't have a player 6'10'' or taller. That's a problem when Kendrick Perkins, our center has foul trouble and fatigue issues sometimes. It also doesn't help that we don't even have much money left to sign the good two or three role players that we need. But with the current roster we have where does that leave us compared to the "elite" teams in the NBA?

The San Antonio Spurs are currently the reigning NBA champions and they have a big three of their own. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili have won three titles together and may not be done yet. In terms of production and accomplishments they have been the best three player combination in the league. They also have international players and good role players like Robert Horry off of the bench that come in, do their job for a good 10-15 minutes and help them scrap out wins. Not to mention that in general their entire team is experienced and battle tested. Every year they're a contender and never have any serious problems on or off the court.

So what does it take to be as good as the reigning NBA champs? You need talent, good chemistry, a deep bench and good coaching. The Celtics really don't have any of that at this point except for talent in the starting unit. We don't know how KG, Pierce and Allen are going to gel. If they do that's great but the team still lacks some real talent off the bench and a good coach. That leads me to our other major problem Glenn "Doc" Rivers is that problem. He has never accomplished anything relevent as a coach and has proven his in-game coaching is extremely weak. With the core of young players leaving, Doc now loses his best assett, being a player's coach and being patient in developing young talent. We have no time to wait Doc, there is a short window of time to win a championship and your "ability to charm the press" isn't going to help you when you continue to have bad substitution patterns and below average out-of-bounds plays. To win you have to have all five players on the court working together at the end of the game. You can't just give the ball to your superstar and hope that he hits a contested shot. Another issue, ever heard of playing against the zone? Or the pick-and-roll? How about screens and cuts? Doc can't continue to do what he's done because it's not going to work for this team and has shown it hasn't worked in the past. Either Doc needs to make some changes to his coaching style this year or step down as head coach and let somebody else do it because a Doc Rivers coached team will never win a championship.

There are a lot of positives and things going right for this team though. Is it even neccesary to mention the amount of talent that we have? There really isn't a team in the entire league with the talent of the combination of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. If there was one team it would be the Phoenix Suns but as far as I'm concerned the Suns are on the same level as us. They only have a 7 or 8 man rotation and can't grind it out until the playoffs because their coach is incompetent and the style the play they use is tiring to the players. Even though he's a rookie, I'm very confident going into the season with Rajon Rondo as our point guard. He has the skills of a poor man's Jason Kidd and his defense is definitely a plus. Rondo has great playmaking ability, rebounds well, penetrates well and has unmatched awareness on offense and defense at his age. He won't even need to score, that isn't going to be a major issue. There is also a good chance Kendrick Perkins has a breakout year. He has supposedly lost around 20 pounds and will now be the main focus of the big man coach that helped in the development of Al Jefferson (16-11) and Dwight Howard (17-12). He is going to get so many easy baskets because all the focus is going to be on Garnett, Allen and Pierce. And because players won't be willing to challenge KG, they're going to challenge Perkins forgetting he's a pretty good shot blocker and he'll get more blocks as well. I think Perkins is going to be the player that benefits most from the Kevin Garnett trade.

The Celtics may not be title contenders yet but because of how weak the East is there's a legitimate chance that we may be able to make a run to the Finals. The bar shouldn't be set too high though, so a realistic goal is the Eastern Conference Finals. If our bench can perform and/or we can sign some relevent free agents left on the market (Dikembe Mutombo, PJ Brown, Brevin Knight are some) we should be set to go. So in the end, I think this team is a contender but there are no guarantees.

Gagne debuts as Sox win 7-4

It was a pretty eventful game. The Sox took an early 3-0 lead on a Manny Ramirez single in the 3rd along with back-to-back home runs by Eric Hinske and Doug Mirabelli in the 4th. The Orioles quickly tied the game in the 5th. Mirabelli put the Sox up in the 7th, Cora knocked an insurance run in and Pedroia put the game away with a blooper into right on a failed diving catch by Nick Markakis. Tim Wakefield through 7 struck out 5 and only allowed 3 runs. Hideki Okajima came in for the 8th and didn't allow any runs. Then the newly aquired Eric Gagne made his Red Sox debut and got a standing ovation from the Fenway faithful. He struck out the first 2 batters he faced but then gave up 2 straight hits, so the lead was cut to 3. The game ended on a Jay Gibbons fly ball to Manny Ramirez in left. Even though he didn't pick up the save because he wasn't eligible (4-run lead, as the home team), Gagne made a great first impression. The Red Sox took the final game of the series and take it 2-1. This will be their final game at home until the 13th. Jon Lester takes the mound tommorow against Horacio Ramirez of the Seattle Mariners. The game will be on at 10:00 PM EST so you're gonna have to stay up late on the east coast.

On a side note, the Red Sox honored hall of famer Bobby Doerr before the game.

The Yankees lost to the White Sox 13-9. It was a pretty crazy game. The White Sox had an 8-0 lead in the 2nd and the same inning the Yankees tied it up with 8 runs. But this a good because it moves the Sox lead in the AL East up to 8 games.

Newly aquired Celtic Kevin Garnett threw out the first pitch and it was a strike right down the middle. That's exactly what this victory was, it was perfect. The Red Sox came back and won again. The score was 3-1 Baltimore in the bottom of the 7th and the Sox scrapped together 4 runs to take a 5-3 lead heading into the 8th. Youkilis had a clutch hit knocking in 2 runs. The Red Sox tied the series with a victory and will play their final game at Fenway for quite some time tommorow afternoon.

Bell's agent, Mark Bartelstein, says he's talked with the Celtics, who are looking for the right players to fit around Kevin Garnett. The Celtics landed the power forward in a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Bucks would have the right to match any offer for Bell. Bucks general manager Larry Harris says he hopes to retain the former Michigan State star. Bell has been a valuable backup and part-time starter for the Bucks during the past two seasons.

I doubt we get him because Milwaukee will most likely match any offer we make and we aren't willing to spend a lot of money on him but he's a versatile player who would be great to have off the bench. I could see him getting considerable time in the rotation if we sign him. This is just interest at this point though, there don't appear to be heated talks.

Celtics sign Eddie House & Jackie Manuel

The Celtics signed free agent guard Eddie House this afternoon to a one-year deal, apparently solving their need for a veteran backup to point guard Rajon Rondo.

The Celtics also signed Jackie Manuel, a 6-5 wing player who played for Los Angeles in the NBDL last season, and is considered a solid defensive player. He was named the ACC’s defensive player of the year two seasons ago while at North Carolina.

Next up in the free agent market is a big man. PJ Brown, the 37-year-old power forward who is reportedly seeking the full mid-level exception ($5.6 million) for his services, has probably priced himself out of the Celtics’ range.

The team is currently checking into the market for Dikembe Mutombo, who could fill in nicely as a backup behind Kendrick Perkins. Mutombo is currently in Africa, where he is on his annual mission at the head of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program.

Donnelly to undergoe Tommy John Surgery

After struggling with a forearm injury that forced him to the disabled list June 17, Brendan Donnelly finally has a course of action to repair his pitching arm. Donnelly will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Friday or next Tuesday in California. Lewis Yocum, the Angels' team doctor, will perform the surgery. "It's been going on for several years," the Red Sox reliever said. "But there was really no signs of it breaking down over the last three years until now. "We tried everything two times to come back. By doing the surgery now, it gives me an opportunity to pitch next year and four or five years down the line as opposed to just fighting through day by day and wondering when the day is going to come that it's just going to fail. That day came."

Free Agents Now Calling

Presently, agents and league sources confirm that the Celts are looking at four point guards and five big men as they try to find the right players to support their talented trio.

Eddie House, Troy Hudson, Brevin Knight and Charlie Bell are reportedly on the point guard list. Bell is a restricted free agent, which makes his situation a little different (Milwaukee can match any offer he gets). Hudson had his contract bought out by the Timberwolves yesterday, making him a free agent. And while the C’s were previously steering away from Knight because of alleged locker room issues, a source said, “Hey, just about everyone that’s out there now has (a few) spots.”

As for big men, Doc Rivers said the Celts are “very interested” in Dikembe Mutombo as a backup center, while P.J. Brown, Michael Ruffin, Calvin Booth and Scot Pollard are also under consideration.

With money tight as the Celtics head into the market, rookies Glen Davis and Brandon Wallace may get larger roles sooner than expected.

Celtics Fans: Meet Your New "Big Three"

For the first time in years, the media is talking about the Boston Celtics in a positive way and as a word that hasn't been heard among Celtics fans for two decades "contenders." Basketball is once again relevent in Boston with the aquisitions of Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. Like myself, many of Boston's die hards will miss the young players that we watched grow up over the past 2, 3, 4 years but then I think to myself, wow we got Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, oh and that guy who has carried the load of this team since he was drafted, Paul Pierce. There is definitely reason to believe this team has a chance to make the Eastern Conference Finals and win around 50 games. There are three unselfish all-star caliber players on our team that have the drive to win.

Filling The Holes
There definitely needs to be some more moves made though, our bench isn't exactly up there in terms of talent and experience. There's a lone role player, a pretty bad player at that, on our bench with more then 3 years of experience. Brian Scalabrine. And the best player off our bench is coming off of serious knee surgery, Tony Allen. With Ryan Gomes gone, I think we need to re-examine our depth at the SF position. Some players I would like to go after are Matt Barnes and Ime Udoka. Barnes brings experience and shooting off the bench. Both players bring defense and a solid 10 minutes. And of course the dreaded PG and C positions need to be addressed. Besides Garnett and Perkins I don't think we have any other player that is capable of playing the Center position. And I am definitely not comfortable with a combined ONE YEAR OF EXPERIENCE between our starting and backup point guard. Brevin Knight and Garnett's former teammate, Troy Hudson, who was recently bought out by the TWolves would be nice additions at the point guard spot for the players that are still on the market. At the Center position there really aren't any attractive veterans out there that the Celtics could use, except for long-time veteran PJ Brown.

Final Farewells
I am sad to see some of our younger players go. Sebastian Telfair really didn't belong with us so I'm not exactly sobbing over trading him. But Ryan Gomes was one of the classiest players on the Celtics organization period. Al Jefferson is a budding star who is really going to be something special. Gerald Green was definitely one of my favorites and a guy that showed a lot of promise. I have a feeling he'll never live up to his overhype coming out of high school but he will be a good player. Who knows if he'll be a star, an all-star or a journeyman? I think he'll have a shot to start immedietly in Minnesota and will defend his dunk title there. That should bring some excitement. They have a good young team and will be set for the future. Good luck guys, we'll never forget you (except for Telfair and Ratliff).

Gagne must waive his no-trade clause to Boston for the deal to be completed. It is possible the Red Sox will allow him to share the closer's role with Jonathan Papelbon.

A league source just confirmed that the Celtics and Timberwolves have finalized a deal that will bring Kevin Garnett to Boston in exchange for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and two first round draft picks.

Garnett is expected to arrive in Boston this afternoon for a physical.Garnett has agreed to a three-year extension with the Celtics beyond the two remaining on his contract, guaranteeing that he will be a Celtic for the next five years.

One reason for prolonged negotiations was the Celtics’ attempt to lessen the luxury tax hit this team will take next year, with Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen scheduled to earn a combined $54.4 million - the highest of any three-player combo in the NBA.

This will involve finding a way to lessen the impact of a 15 percent trade kicker in Garnett’s contract.

Things are heating up...Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe has a Major League source indicating that the Red Sox have a "pretty good" chance of completing a trade for Jermaine Dye.

The White Sox would apparently receive Wily Mo Pena and a pitching prospect other than Jon Lester or Clay Buccholz. That could still leave Michael Bowden, Daniel Bard, Bryce Cox, or Craig Hansen. All four have struggled this year but still have plenty of promise. Justin Masterson is another intriguing name, but he's pitched well in four starts at Double A.

The Red Sox rode Kevin Youkilis' bat to a 7-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. It was 1-0 Tampa Bay until Youk came up to the plate and hit a 3-run homerun. It brought the at times it seemed like "sleeping" offense to life. The awkward play of the game was when Dioner Navarro was hit on a line drive. Wakefield pitched a great game, striking out 7 over 6 innings. Youkilis drove in 3 and Crisp drove in 2 to lead the way. Manny Delcarmen and Kyle Snyder pitched well out of the pen to finish up the game, allowing 0 runs and just a single hit. Wakefield has had a decision in every one of his games started. He continues to have a great year. The Red Sox take the lead in the series 1-0. Jon Lester takes the hill tommorow for his 2nd start of the year against Jason Shields.

Hopefully this means that we're keeping Brandon Wallace. Wallace actually fits a team need, somebody who can actually play defense. Personally I think this was the right decision for both Ray and the Celtics. With his signing of a 2-year deal in Italy this was pretty much expected. Training camp started at 8:45 a.m. sharp. The players were greeted by warm, but not uncomfortably humid, weather and a capacity crowd.

Patriots donning red (no-contact) jerseys included RB Laurence Maroney, LB Junior Seau, LB Eric Alexander, and all three QBs (Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, and Matt Gutierrez). Conversely, RB Sammy Morris was no longer wearing a red jersey, which he had been doing during mini camp last month.

CB Asante Samuel was not present for the first practice of training camp. His holdout has officially begun. When asked about his fellow DB, safety Rodney Harrison said after practice, "I miss Zant. I wish he was here. I know he’s working hard and I can’t wait to see him."

First-round pick Brandon Meriweather was also not in attendance Friday morning. The rookie DB remains the Patriots’ only unsigned draft choice.

Other notable absentees: WR Donté Stallworth and QB Vinny Testaverde. The Worcester Telegram & Gazette speculated a few days ago that Stallworth is injured. Testaverde, though he participated in mini camp, was not under contract with the team and remains a free agent.

Randy Moss is no longer sporting the number 6 jersey. He is now wearing 81.

WR Kelley Washington was taken off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and took part in the morning practice. Seven other Patriots remained on the PUP, however: DL Richard Seymour, WR Troy Brown, WR Chad Jackson, TE David Thomas, DB Mel Mitchell, DB Eddie Jackson, and RB Justise Hairston.

First-year punter Tom Malone struggled all morning. He had some nice punts, but was inconsistent. Incumbent veteran Josh Miller was relegated to stop-watch duty, chronicling the snap-to-punt times and hang-times of both Malone and Baugher.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft was seen walking the practice field, mingling with coaches and training staff.

As he did during mini camp, newcomer Adalius Thomas took turns at both inside and outside linebacker.

CB Ellis Hobbs nicely broke up an otherwise well-thrown deep ball intended for Jabar Gaffney during WR-vs-DB drills.

Brady hooked up with Moss on several passes, much to the delight of the overflow crowd.

Allan Ray will play in Italy

Allan Ray will play overseas upon agreeing to a two-year contract with Italian Serie A team Lottomatica Roma worth $2 million, a league source said yesterday.

What a way to bounce back from last night's heartbreaking shutout. The Sox came out tonight and scored 14 runs. The pitching wasn't that great though. Gabbard was goin strong for a while but they left him in too long. And Julian Tavarez letting up a grand slam definitely didn't help. But it was a great night for a few players, including Manny Ramirez and Wily Mo Pena. Manny finished with 2 home runs and 4 RBI's. Wily Mo had a great night, going 4 for 5 with a home run and 4 RBI. I'm wondering if this breakout was because of all the trade rumors, lighting a fire under Wily Mo or just one good night from him. I'd love to see him get going hitting and stay with the team, being that big bat we need. Mike Lowell also had a good game going 3 for 5 and knocking in 2. I was impressed with the way the team played offensively but the pitching could have been much much better. I was actually scared the Indians were going to comeback and win after being down 9-1. The Sox with a 14-9 win took the game and the series 3 out of the 4 games. And Frank Robinson, the legend pitched the first pitch just in case you were interested. The Sox will travel to Tampa Bay for 3-game set and then will briefly be back home on the 29th to take on Baltimore.

The Yankees were shutout by the young, up and coming Royals 7-0. Igawa once again pitched terribly. Overpaid and overhyped? The AL East lead is back to 7.5 games where it belongs and the Red Sox are hoping for it to stay around there if the Yanks are gonna continue to stay hot. Alex Rodriguez remained at 499 home runs in his effort to become the 22nd member of the 500-home run club. The two powerhouses meet again in late August at Yankee Stadium.

Trade Rumors Update
Jul 26 - There continue to be rumblings in Boston that the Red Sox are still interested in Todd Helton, the Denver Post reports. But Helton, who has a no-trade clause in his contract, said during the offseason that he probably would reject any midseason trade. With the Rockies still in the hunt in the NL West, a Helton deal seems highly unlikely.

Schilling strikes out 8 in Pawtucket

Curt Schilling pitched great in Pawtucket, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 8 in 5 innings of shutout ball. The Paw Sox lost the game in the 10th inning on a Brent Clevlen single.

"Most importantly I feel strong,'' he said. "I felt stronger as the game went on.''

He wants to get back to Boston but doesn't want to rush his return.

R.I.P Reggie Lewis (July 27, 1993)

Tommorow is the 14-year anniversary of Reggie Lewis' untimely death. He died of a heart attack at a practice in 1993 in Waltham. This was crushing to the Celtics because not only did they lose an all-star player, they lost an all-star human being. The Boston Celtics retired Lewis' #35 immedietly after he died, as did his alma-mater Northeastern University. Lewis was only 27 when he passed away and hadn't even reached his prime yet, but basketball fans knew he was going to be something special when he was voted into the 1992 NBA all-star game. In his final year, he averaged 20.8 points per game, 1.48 steals per game and shot 48% from the field. No doubt that this was the worst loss in Celtics history, even worse then losing Len Bias. Not because Bias dying wasn't sad but Lewis was a player Celtics fans grew to love. They loved him and hoped for him to lead them back to greatness. Could they have been good enough to beat the Bulls of the 90's if Lewis didn't die? Could they have won 17, 18, 19? We'll never know.

I couldn't find any youtube videos dedicated to Lewis but you don't need a video on Youtube to show how great of a person you were. Reggie Lewis will forever be remembered. I dedicate tommorow to Reggie Lewis and hope some of you do the same. Go out and do the right thing tommorow for Reggie.

Red Sox sign Brady Clark, Ellsbury to the DL & trade rumors

First, the Red Sox have signed outfielder Brady Clark. He was most recently with the Dodgers. Clark will join Pawtucket in Toledo for tonight's game.

Clark, 34, hit .224 in 47 games with Los Angeles before being designated for assignment on June 10, clearing waivers, and becoming a free agent.

To make room for Clark, the PawSox have placed Jacoby Ellsbury on the seven-day disabled list retroactive to Sunday. Ellsbury tweaked his groin scoring from second base in Saturday's win over Toledo. It happened in the eighth inning.

The Red Sox are among the teams interested in acquiring Tampa Bay Devil Rays infielder Ty Wigginton, according to a major league source, though a source familiar with the Sox said a trade was not close as of yesterday afternoon.

Major league sources also have confirmed the Sox have interest in Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira; White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye; Oakland outfielder Bobby Kielty, who was recently designated for assignment; and Dodgers third base prospect Andy LaRoche, who has been hot in Triple A Las Vegas, a team the Red Sox' Allard Baird has been scouting.

I'm thinking that Clark just underachieved this year because in 2005, he batted .306 which is pretty impressive. You know he has the skills offensively, he can play all 3 outfield positions well and would just be coming off the bench at the most once in a while. This probably indicates a Wily Mo Pena trade. I don't really think there's anything to the Ellsbury DL trip. It's a short stint and probably is just to get ready to make some room for the trade deadline.

Also, Wiggington would be a good pickup if we can get him for cheap, he's a good player overall. My favorite target though is Mark Teixeira. He could do a lot for this team and is on the market right now. It would fill the one need this team has right now, a big bat.

BC's Ryan Named ACC Preseason Player Of The Year

Boston College senior quarterback Matt Ryan has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Player of the Year in a vote by league media members, the conference announced today.

"This is a fantastic honor, especially since there are so many great players in the ACC," Ryan said. "I'd like to thank the media members for their confidence in me. I'm extremely excited about my senior season and I can't wait to kick things off when camp starts next week."

The league also announced that cornerback DeJuan Tribble is a member of the preseason All-ACC team. A shutdown corner and return specialist who has started 27 games in his first three seasons, Tribble received All-ACC second-team honors in 2006. He finished last season with 135 career tackles (112 solos), 8.0 tackles for loss, 14 pass breakups, 11 interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

The University of Massachusetts was picked as the prohibitive favorite to win the Colonial Athletic Association championship in a vote of the league's head coaches and selected media, receiving 15 first-place votes.

With 12 starters returning from the team that reached the Division 1-AA title game, the Minutemen were the overwhelming choice to win the North Division, nearly doubling the first-place votes received by runner-up New Hampshire (eight). Maine, Northeastern, Hofstra, and Rhode Island rounded out the North voting.

James Madison (11) and Delaware (10) shared most of the first-place votes in the South Division, with Towson and Villanova receiving one each.

-"It goes to the Mark McGwire thing in Congress," said Schilling. "I mean, I'm a huge Mark McGwire fan. But I just always thought it was very simple: If you did something and someone asks you if you did it and you didn't do it, you say no. Any other answer than no is some form of yes, isn't it?"

-"Jose Canseco admitted he cheated his entire career," said Schilling. "Everything he ever did should be wiped clean. I think his MVP should go back and should go to the runnerup."

Come on. I hate to lose like this. Josh Beckett pitches a gem, allowing just a solo home run and the offense doesn't do anything. It feels like 2 weeks ago all over again. There was 2 awful baserunning plays by Coco Crisp and Jason Varitek I would love to have back. Crisp was running home and had the game tied easily, but instead he slowed up about 8 feet in front of the plate and was thrown out. In a failed hit-and-run Varitek was caught in between 1st and 2nd, getting tagged out. Each pitcher allowed just 4 hits and it was a great pitching battle. Carmona was excellent and really overall didn't outpitch Beckett, it was just the solo home run against Beckett by Gutierrez. I really have nothing much to say about this loss because the offense was pitiful compared to the last five games. Beckett struck out 7 over 8 innings. Carmona struck out 6 over 8 innings.

The current margin between the Red Sox and Yankees in the AL East is 7.0 games and with a Yankees victory it would be cut to 6.5. It is not looking good for the Sox, every game is a must win because of the Yankees 6 game winning streak. They cannot afford to allow the Yankees to get within a couple games. This is looking like last year all over again but worse.

Big Papi to return tonight

According to Jeff Horrigan of the Boston Herald Big Papi will return from his left shoulder injury tonight that's kept him off the field for a little bit. He took batting practice yesterday and appears to look great.

“There’s still a little pinch but not bad,” Ortiz said. “That’s what happens when you get older.”

Big Papi's return to the lineup isn't as critical as it may seem at this point in time but having that big bat in there when you're already hitting great is a huge bonus. I'd rather continue to rest him and make sure he's 100% because the lineup we're putting out there has definitely gotten the job done as you can tell from the 5-game winning streak. It's always great to see your star player come back from an injury though. On a side note, seeing Manny get a little rest because of this has been great, after Francona moved him to DH to give him some time off from the field.

Going into August with the return of Lester, Schilling and Ortiz the Red Sox should have a pretty good month. My only fear is a repeat of last year's Varitek injury because honestly even if he doesn't put up the offensive numbers that guy is the definition of a captain and is really the glue that holds the team together.

Well, David Ortiz's return to the lineup should be interesting. I'm curious to see how Francona plays with the lineup tonight with Crisp and Lugo hitting great.

The first pitch will be approximately at 7:05 PM EST in Cleveland as the Red Sox take on the Indians. Josh Beckett will take the mound as he will be looking to become the first pitcher in the league to get 14 wins.

8 Patriots players on PUP list

Defensive lineman Richard Seymour and wide receiver Troy Brown headline a list of eight players placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list by the Patriots yesterday.

Players on the PUP list cannot participate in practice, and are generally at different stages of their rehabilitations. Both Seymour and Brown are recovering from knee injuries.
Others on the list are tight end David Thomas, receivers Kelley Washington and Chad Jackson, running back Justise Hairston, safety Mel Mitchell, and cornerback Eddie Jackson.

Thomas is recovering from a broken foot sustained in the offseason program, while Chad Jackson (ACL), Mitchell (biceps), and Eddie Jackson (ACL) are working their way back from injuries suffered last season.

If players remain on the PUP list by the final roster cutdown Sept. 1, they must stay on it for at least the first six weeks of the regular season.

-I don't believe there is any reason for concern over this. Like the article said, Seymour was on it last year and had a pro bowl year. It is just an excuse for players to rest their injuries during training camp and is totally understandable. I do except a few of these players (Seymour, C. Jackson, Brown) to be taken off the PUP list and placed on the final roster.

Dice-K wins pitchers duel with Sabathia

In a game where they were only able to muster up 1 run and 6 hits against Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia the Sox came out victorious. It took a great effort from Daisuke Matsuzaka and the rest of the pitching staff. Matsuzaka pitched 7 strong innings, striking out 5 and allowing no runs. Hideki Okajima pitched the 8th, allowing no hits and no runs. Jonathan Papelbon closed out the game for his 23rd save of the year with 2 strikeouts. The Red Sox pitching staff retired the last seven Indians hitters in order. Nobody really shined on offense for the Sox in this pitcher's duel, but Mike Lowell got an RBI-single in the 4th, knocking in Kevin Youkilis. It took a good effort defensively to scrap out this 1-run victory. The Sox made the key plays when they were neccesary and definitely took some of the pressure off of their pitchers. A key play for the Sox was in the 7th when Josh Barfield bunted to Kevin Youkilis to move the runner up, but instead Youk made a great play and got the force out at second. It was a down night for Pedroia who finished 0-4. I don't think anything was going on, it just wasn't his night and he went up against a great pitcher. The Sox took the 2-0 lead in the series and are hoping to continue their 5-game winning streak. Boston's record now stands at 61-39.

According to a league source, the Patriots will do what everyone expects and place Jackson on the physically-unable-to-perform list in advance of the summer’s first practice.

Jackson is said to be able to sprint on the surgically repaired knee but still lacks the strength to cut and change direction. He is, however, considered to be significantly ahead of his recovery schedule.

Still, the Patriots will exercise caution and re-evaluate the receiver - who the team traded up to get with the 36th overall pick in the 2006 draft - in late August.

At that point, they will have three options: They could activate him; they could move him to the reserve/PUP, which would sideline him for at least the first six weeks of the season; or they could place Jackson on injured reserve, ending his second season in the league.

Vinny Testaverde will likely only come in near the end of the season in a meaningless game to continue his touchdown streak. I highly doubt Matt Gutierrez ever sees the field unless the Patriots decide that he is more suitable than Matt Cassell to be the 2nd-string quarterback, unlikely.

Also, I see Ryan O'Callaghan and Billy Yates making a run for a starting spot and Gene Mruczkowski getting most of the playing time off the bench.

Lester's emotional return a success

Prior to gametime the Red Sox starting pitcher gave all of his teammates high fives and patiently waited to get into the game and pitch. Sounds like any other day, right? This wasn't just any other day though, it was the return of fan-favorite pitcher Jon Lester. Lester is coming back to pitch in the big leagues for the first time since August 2006 after being diagnosed with cancer. The Cleveland fans didn't show him as much respect as I had hoped but he wasn't even thinking about that. He was focused on getting the victory, helping the team maintain it's lead in the AL East and become the first 60-win team in baseball. He did just that, strikeout out 6 in 6 innings and only allowing 2 runs. The best strikeout was in the 4th inning with the bases loaded and 2 outs. Grady Sizemore was batting and Sizemore had hit a 2-run homer in the 3rd. Lester punched him out with a fastball to end the inning and get out of a jam. His mother was a nervous wreck but was absolutely thrilled when the NESN cameras showed her reaction. It was a solid performance and definitely what I expected out of the 23-year old. Leading the offense was Manny Ramirez with 2 RBI's and Coco Crisp going 4 for 5. Mike Timlin, Javier Lopez and Manny Delcarmen all pitched well out of the pen, allowing just 1 hit and striking out a pair. Lester picked up the victory, his first on the year as the Sox took the first of a 3-game set with Cleveland to take a 1-0 advantage.

The lead in the AL East once again remained at 7.5 games as the Yankees defeated the Royals 9-2. As long as we keep picking up wins the Yankees can't catch us. This definitely is a series neither Cleveland nor Boston can afford to lose with both the AL East & AL Central division races heating up. The Red Sox record stands at 60-39.

Wily Mo to White Sox?

The Red Sox have had talks with the White Sox about a deal that would send fourth outfielder Wily Mo Pena to Chicago. But before they do it, Boston would like to acquire Pena's replacement. Bobby Kielty of Oakland has been mentioned as a possibility.

Wily Mo is definitely a good hitter, but he really doesn't fit in with the Red Sox. He belongs at DH but they stick him in the outfield even though he really has no skills out there and he knows that. I'm not sure how this Bobby Kielty will help us though to be honest, but I really don't mind because I don't think he's the player we need. We need another big bat in the lineup. But I think Chicago would be a great fit for Wily Mo. I'd prefer to look for a deal that would package Wily Mo & Lugo though for a nice shortstop.

The Countdown Begins

In a few hours Jon Lester will step onto a big league mound for the first time since August 2006 after being diagnosed with cancer (anaplastic large cell lymphoma). Lester was the Sox #1 prospect. He started the 2006 season 5-0 and finished 7-2. He won 2 of his final 3 starts before he was diagnosed as well. But Jon Lester doesn't want to talk about his cancer, he wants to talk about baseball and he wants to play baseball. The lefty has become a BoSox as well as baseball fan favorite and I am sure he will get a standing ovation from the fans in Cleveland. This has been one of the most anticipated days of the year for Boston fans. We all knew it would come but the question was when it would come. He has done solid in Pawtucket and should help the team immedietly. His teammates are excited, especially Jonathan Papelbon who has been his biggest supporter. When Lester steps on the mound, I know fans around the country will be smiling hoping for the best for him.

Al Jefferson invited to Team USA camp in August?

The US originally had planned to trim the roster from this week's 17 to 12 after yesterday's game. But they decided to bring everyone back for the training camp in August, along with Greg Oden and Nick Collison. Additionally, there will be an elite team of young NBA players brought in to scrimmage Team USA, and the Celtics' Al Jefferson will get a call. "He's on my list," said Team USA honcho Jerry Colangelo. The final, 12-man roster for the Olympic qualifier does not have to be submitted to FIBA until Aug. 21, the day before the tourney starts.

It's great that Al is getting the chance to at the very least practice with the best players in the NBA. I have a feeling he won't make the team because of how deep it is but he will be able to get experience, getting a feel for how he's gonna play some of these guys before the season starts. The downside to this of course is injury. But I mean, he's just gonna be scrimmaging.

Buchholz pitches gem in PawSox loss

Clay Buchholz pitched absolutely phenomenal in Pawtucket against Louisville striking out 10 batters in 5 innings. He only allowed 2 runs and 3 hits. Unfortunately Pawtucket's hitters couldn't get anything going so they were limited to 1 run. The final score was 11-1 in Louisville's favor. Buchholz is the Red Sox best pitching prospect and was recently called up to Triple-A Pawtucket. This is his second appearence. In his debut he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and struck out four. In Portland (AA) he was having a great season with 116 strikeouts and a 1.77 ERA until the recent call up. David Pauley (6-3) pitches tommorow against "The Bats."

My thoughts on Buchholz are that he is going to stay in AAA for another season after this year and then come up for the MLB team, the Boston Red Sox in 2009. He isn't expected to make an impact soon and it would be best for us to keep him in the minor leagues until he is completely ready. We have a pitching staff capable of holding it's own for the future and Buchholz will only make it better. Imagine a pitching staff of Jon Lester, Kason Gabbard and Clay Buchholz and those wouldn't even be your best pitchers. Daisuke Matsuzaka and Josh Beckett wouldn't even be 30 and would be hitting their primes. I just hope the development doesn't hit a bump in the road (injury or something). He just needs to pitch and pitch and pitch.

The Red Sox dominated the White Sox today for the most part. It was 8 to 1 until Manny Delcarmen came in and pitched pretty poorly. But the Red Sox held on until the end. Manny Ramirez and Mike Lowell both had 3-run home runs. The offense was good today, whenever you have 8 runs you give yourself a great chance to win. Wakefield pitched good too, which helped. Papelbon came in in the 9th and worked his way out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout and getting Konerko to ground out into a double play. This was the Red Sox 3rd victory in a row against the White Sox and they finished the series taking three out of four.

Inside Ryan Gomes' Mind

Ryan Gomes is looking for big things next season. "I think Ray Allen will help our team out a lot, but it all depends on how we defend, how we play together, and everyone being healthy," he said. "We have a solid team and a solid group of guys. We should make some noise in the Eastern Conference." Gomes also came out in support of Doc Rivers getting a contract extension ("he deserved it") and said it was obvious that Danny Ainge and Celtics ownership had a lot of faith in Rivers. "We have a lot of faith in ourselves as a team," he said. Gomes made his comments at Stonehill College, where he hosts a basketball camp. He also has announced a partnership between his nonprofit organization, "Hoops for Heart Health," and "Parent Heart Watch" in hopes of raising awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in children and donating defibrillators to schools across the country. Gomes learned about SCA when a childhood friend died from the condition.

Lester called up, Tavarez moved to the bullpen

Sox fans have been waiting a while for this move and it came at the right time. Tavarez has struggled in his last 3 or 4 starts and the Red Sox haven't blown the AL East division lead yet. It would have been too late to bring Jon Lester back after blowing the lead when all momentum would have been lost. My only question is, how is this rotation going to look come August 1st? With Curt Schilling expected back that would leave 6 starters in the rotation. It would be wrong to send Kason Gabbard back to AAA for all he's done since he's been called up and it would be wrong to send Lester back down after having him here for a mere two weeks. The best solution would be to put Tim Wakefield in the bullpen, where he was very good a few years ago for the Sox. People forget that Wake didn't begin as a starter, he sort of turned into one. I also expect this to be a step into the right direction and turning the page to the future. Schilling will most likely retire because the Red Sox won't offer him an extension and I have a feeling Wakefield may do the same once his contract expires. Lester as well as Gabbard should stay and Clay Buchholz hopefully will be ready to come up about two years from now and make an impact. And Tavarez is finally back in the bullpen where he belongs.

Lester will start tommorow July 23rd against the Indians at 7:05. The game will be on ESPN.

Celtics Free Agent Options?

Team Needs: Veteran Point Guard/Defensive Center

Well, it looks like all of the coveted free agent targets we were looking at have started signing with other teams. Joe Smith signed with the Bulls, Chucky Atkins signed with the Nuggets, Steve Blake signed with the Blazers, Derek Fisher signed with the Lakers. And it looks like "perfect fit" Brevin Knight is getting ready to pack his bags and move to LA to play for the Clippers. Still though, anything can happen between now and the beginning of training camp. I really don't expect us to make any drastic moves to put the team over the top and I really don't expect us to overpay "Moore" money than we should for any scrub who played for his contract last year. But I do expect Danny Ainge to make some sort of small signing or trade before training camp starts. I'm honestly not satisfied with the roster he's put together as a championship contender. Maybe 2nd round? It would be nice to get an international player for cheap because it seems like every team is doing it and every team is having success with it. For some reason though, we can't seem to find any international players even though we have one of the best scouting GM's in the league. Besides Brevin Knight though, there really are no free agents worth signing. It's a poor free agent class and anybody that is actually of value has already been signed or re-signed. I would be much more comfortable making a small trade.

Theo Papaloukas - He is a European prospect and a point guard. There have been rumblings that Los Angeles and Boston showing interest. I really don't know much about him but it's interesting nonetheless.

Brevin Knight - He is a great fit for the team and is a veteran PG. He does everything you ask for out of a point guard and has been a consistent player for his entire career. He could teach Rondo the ropes and be had for the MLE. He did a great job helping an already talented Raymond Felton become a very good player and groom him to take over the Bobcats.

PJ Brown - Good big man that proved that he can still play pushing 40. If he does play for another year, he'll be entering his 15th season and immedietly add experience and solid defense to a thin and undersized front court. I don't expect him to play and my only concern if he does play is he will ask for a bit too much money.

Wang ZhiZhi - Played very well in the summer league and even though his first NBA experience wasn't that great, he's a shooting big man who could be a guy the Celtics are looking at to fill a need at Center. He adds size at a legit 7-1 to the frontcourt and maybe can find his niche with Boston. This is one of the last guys I want to sign though.

Kason Gabbard pitched great today, only allowing one run and two hits over 7 innings. Nice follow up to his complete game shutout. The BoSox scored seven runs in the 7th inning, which put the game away after early it looked like they weren't hitting. That inning lasted over 40 minutes. Coco Crisp was the offensive star today with 5 RBI's. He came up three times with the bases loaded and every time knocked runs in. He finished the day 3-for-4. Others contributing were JD Drew (2), Eric Hinske (2), Jason Varitek (1) and Mike Lowell (1). Javier Lopez and Joel Piniero pitched two strong innings out of the bullpen only allowing one run. It was another nice game for the guys. They've scored 21 runs over the past two games and appear to have gotten their mojo back.

Schilling update:

Curt Schilling pitched three scoreless innings in a minor league rehab outing for Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday, striking out six -- including Mark Bellhorn, a teammate from Boston's 2004 World Series championship team.

Schilling allowed two hits, walked none and threw 32 of his 40 pitches for strikes, fanning the side in the second inning. He left to a big cheer from the sold-out, 10,032-seat McCoy Stadium.
Bellhorn was also greeted with a big cheer when he was introduced and when he came up in the second inning. Schilling appeared to grin when Bellhorn stepped into the batter's box, but then struck out his old teammate on three pitches.

Big Papi update: *David Ortiz missed the game with a strained left shoulder suffered as a result of a head-first slide Friday night. The MRI was negative -- showing no structural damage -- and he's day-to-day.

Associated Press - A sports memorabilia company sued Red Sox star David Ortiz for $1 million Friday, claiming he breached a contract by failing to autograph a required number of items and appear at "meet-and-greet'' events. Steiner Sports Marketing Inc. of New Rochelle, N.Y., said the company signed Ortiz to a contract to autograph 13,000 items, appear at public signing events, and to do these things exclusively for Steiner until Jan. 31, 2008. "Ortiz has constantly remained substantially below the amount of memorabilia items required to be signed under the agreement,'' according to the lawsuit filed in Manhattan's state Supreme Court.

Curt Schilling will make a rehab stint in Pawtucket against Louisville tommorow. Red Sox fans are hoping that he will perform well coming off of the shoulder injury that put him on the DL at the end of June. He has been working extremely hard and has already gone through a few bullpen sessions and simulated starts in Boston.

The game will not be televised in the New England Area on NESN. You may be able to catch highlights though later on either Extra Innings, Extra Innings Extra or Sportsdesk.

The Red Sox evened up their 4-game series with Chicago Friday, with an exciting 10 to 3 victory. Hmm so where should I start? Terry Francono managed to get ejected in the 1st inning arguing the umpire screwing JD Drew of a home run. David Ortiz left the game with a left shoulder strain. Josh Beckett struck out a season-high 10 batters. Julio Lugo hit a grand slam. Coco Crisp had a bases clearing triple and a clutch outfield assist to end the 6th inning. And the Sox bullpen once again got the job done. I have to say, after staying quiet for a few weeks this offense kind of exploded out of nowhere. It's great to see that they aren't completely sucking. Hopefully this can spark some sort of awesome play for the rest of the season. Beckett was great, the offense was absolutely fantastic and besides Big Papi leaving the game with an injury there really was nothing bad to say about this game.

In other baseball news, the Yankees lost 14-4 to the Devil Rays so the Sox lead is back up to 8 games and Barry Bonds didn't hit a home run, staying par at 753. He finished the game 0-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
